Tropical Watercolour Seascapes: Learn to Compose Your Own Summer Paintings
-
Welcome to a watercolor adventure that’s perfect for beginners and intermediate artists alike! In this class, you’ll learn how to create stunning tropical seascapes featuring distant islands, palm trees, and the calming blues of the ocean. Even if you’ve never painted with watercolors before, don’t worry—I’ll guide you every step of the way, starting with the basics and gradually building up your skills.
This class is packed with valuable insights and practical techniques, broken down into three major parts:
Composing a Painting: We’ll begin with the essentials. You’ll learn about basic watercolor techniques like wet-on-wet, wet-on-dry, and dry-brushing. I’ll also cover loose watercolor techniques for a more relaxed style, as well as key principles of perspective and composition. You’ll discover how to mix colors effectively to avoid muddy results and how to create a harmonious, cohesive painting that really comes together.
Exercises: Once you’ve grasped the basics, it’s time to get hands-on! We’ll work through a series of exercises designed to help you practice and refine your skills. You’ll paint four simple skies that set different moods for your seascapes, and explore how to depict distant islands in varying levels of detail. We’ll also cover how to draw and paint different types of palm trees. These exercises are not just about practice—they’re about building your confidence and preparing you for more complex work.
Final Projects: Now it’s time to put everything you’ve learned into practice with four guided projects. Each project is a step-by-step tutorial designed to challenge you just enough to keep things interesting, with each one increasing in difficulty. We’ll start with a Daytime Tropical Seascape, move on to a Tropical Sunset by the Beach, then paint a Boat in Water with a Small Island, and finally, a Fishing Boat Resting by a Palm Tree. By the time you reach the final project, you’ll be ready for an extra challenge—your own creative task where you’ll choose a reference image, compose your scene, and bring your tropical vision to life.
By the end of this class, you’ll have a deep understanding of how watercolor behaves and how to work with it rather than trying to control it. You’ll leave with a strong foundation in watercolor techniques, a collection of finished projects, and the confidence to continue exploring this beautiful medium on your own.
-
Composing a Painting: Master basic watercolor techniques like wet-on-wet, wet-on-dry, and dry brushing. Learn loose watercolor techniques for a more relaxed approach, and discover how to effectively use perspective and composition to create cohesive, balanced paintings. Understand the essentials of color mixing to avoid muddy colors and create harmonious palettes.
Exercises: Practice your new skills by painting four simple skies that can set different moods for your seascapes. Learn how to depict distant islands with varying levels of detail to add depth to your paintings. Explore how to draw and paint different types of palm trees, each with its own character.
Final Projects: Follow along with step-by-step tutorials to create four different tropical seascapes, each one more challenging than the last. Learn how to approach each painting with confidence, from the initial sketch to the final details. Finish with a creative task that allows you to apply everything you’ve learned to a painting of your own design.

This class is a comprehensive journey into the world of watercolor, offering you the chance to build a strong foundation and explore more advanced techniques at your own pace. Whether you’re completely new to watercolor or looking to refine your skills, this class has something for everyone. You’ll not only learn how to paint beautiful tropical seascapes but also gain a deeper understanding of how to approach any watercolor project with confidence.
-
This class is for anyone interested in learning how to paint tropical seascapes, from complete beginners to intermediate artists. If you’re a beginner, you’ll find the step-by-step guidance and foundational lessons incredibly helpful. Intermediate artists will appreciate the deeper dive into composition, color theory, and the creative freedom offered by the final project. No matter your skill level, if you’re eager to learn and create, this class is for you!
-
In this class, you’ll complete five projects—four guided paint-along projects and one creative task where you’ll put everything you’ve learned to the test. Here’s what you can expect:
Paint-Along Projects: We’ll start each project with a simple pencil sketch, outlining the horizon line, distant islands, palm trees, and any other elements in the scene. You’ll learn how to paint each part separately, allowing the paint to dry before moving on to the next section. This approach makes it easier to focus on one technique at a time and prevents you from feeling overwhelmed.
Project 1: Daytime Tropical Seascape: Begin with a simple yet striking scene featuring a bright, sunny sky and calm waters.
Project 2: Tropical Sunset by the Beach: Explore the warm tones of a tropical sunset, with the sky’s colors reflecting beautifully on the ocean.
Project 3: Boat in Water with a Small Island: Add a small boat and distant island to your seascape, learning how to balance these elements to create a peaceful, inviting scene.
Project 4: Fishing Boat Resting by a Palm Tree: Focus on the details of a fishing boat nestled by a palm tree, capturing the tranquility of this tropical setting.
Creative Task: For your final project, you’ll choose a reference image and use everything you’ve learned to create your own tropical watercolor seascape. Take your time to plan your composition, choose your colors, and paint with confidence. This project is all about applying your new skills in a way that’s uniquely yours.
After completing each project, upload your work to the project section of the class. I’m excited to see your progress and will provide feedback on each of your paintings. If you have any questions or run into any challenges, don’t hesitate to ask in the Discussion section—I’m here to help, and your questions might help others too.
Have fun with your projects, and happy painting! 😊
